We’ve been meaning to get another blog post out, specifically about our latest beer, for a while now but we’ve been very busy wading through a lot of orders which isn’t a bad thing. It’s been a very busy first half of the year.

Anyway, for the past three years now we have been running a competition with the final year illustration students at Falmouth University to design a piece of art that will be printed onto the labels of one of our beer releases of the year. It is by far the most exciting project for us as we are able to work alongside such talented young individuals and it is always a struggle to select a final winner as the level of artistic talent is just so high.

Previous beers have included a golden ale and a juicy DDH pale ale, which went into our core range, but this year we opted to give the students a very different beer…a fruited smoothie sour. We wanted them to be able to produce an illustration in their own style whilst using our previous labels as a very loose guidance in what we were looking for alongside gaining inspiration from the apricot, tangerine and raspberry purees that were in the beer.

And yet again, they really didn’t disappoint with final submissions ranging from hand painted gouache, to paper collage, to digital art. It was a very close pick between a number of submissions with the winning piece of art going to Charlotte Lewis. A fanatically whimsy and simple yet so so effective design with seagulls in varying poses and a beautiful hue of red as the main background colour, such an impactful piece when on the shelves or fridges.

The beer itself is a beautifully tart and fruity smoothie sour packed full of peach, apricot and raspberry puree - an absolute summer smasher. Expect a huge hit of peach, apricot and raspberry married perfectly with a sour punch to the mouth.
